Special Occasion Dress for Spring

When I’m looking for a special occasion dress I am interested in something that is affordable and that I can (hopefully) wear more than once. I absolutely understand that photos are going to be taken so there will be photographic evidence of what I wore! This means that I won’t wear the same dress to a different occasion if it involves the same core group of people. That might be just me but there I said it. For example, the dress I am sharing today is a contender for my nephew’s graduation and my niece’s dance recital. But since both of these events will be attended by the very same people I won’t wear the same dress.

I have a few other criteria for a special occasion dress. One thing is that wearing it will not be dependent on shapewear. Knowing myself as I do, if shapewear is involved more than likely I won’t enjoy wearing the dress. Because these special occasions are few and far between (most of the time) I keep my budget at $100 or under – and this comes with the requirement that I’ll wear it more than once.

You might have different criteria for your special occasion dress and that is A-Okay with me! The world is a much more interesting place when we do what we love, wear what we want, and stay true to ourselves!

The Dress

This style of dress is a classic, A-line shift silhouette. Affectionately known as the Jackie dress with a nod to style icon Jackie Kennedy, this shift dress is a tweed fabric with a braided neckline and faux gold crested buttons. It’s a mod mini that I think is not only timeless but so chic and on trend! I finally decided to try this one because a) the price was good, b) the color selection, and c) it has gotten so many good reviews!

After debating back and forth, I went for it on Saturday afternoon. To my surprise it arrived on Easter Sunday! I ordered the dress in a size small in navy. The tweed fabric is thick without being too heavy. It zips up the back and is fully lined. The dress is available in 10 colorways and comes in sizes XS-XL. The care label says ‘hand wash’ but I will wash it on the gentle cycle of my washing machine and hang it to dry. Avara has the same style dress, same fabrication (100% polyester) and same washing instructions. It, however, is $88 and only available in berry. Tuckernuck also has the dress and the price is $268 (btw it’s also polyester but the care instructions say machine was on the gentle cycle).

Navy was my color of choice, although I debated getting the green. I like classic navy as it’s a little less harsh against my skin than black and it’s a little different. I’m sure I’m not the only one who sees a sea of LBDs at special occasions! Nothing wrong with that BUT if I have a chance to do something else I’ll take it!

How to Style It

The nice thing about a dress like this is that it basically styles itself! A necklace isn’t needed and would detract from the style of the dress. Since it has gold tone buttons, choose gold tone jewelry. I wore earrings and the bracelets I wear daily. My nude kitten heels elongate my leg. I’d grab a nude bag and head out the door!

Another Option

If this dress is on the short side for you, I would recommend this one. The fabric has a bit of sheen to it so it actually looks far dressier than a typical slip dress. It does need a good steam btw and I shot this photo when I was getting ready to leave for Italy so rush, rush, rush it was!
