I’ve heard it said before that what we most look forward to in Fall and Winter is layering – at least when it comes to fashion! It’s true for me, I love nothing more than adding a jacket or sweater but the fun doesn’t have to stop once the temperatures warm up. Let’s rethink our layers for Spring. Today I’ll show you how to do that and how just changing your mindset a bit, you can elevate your look.
Rethink Layers for Spring
Layers don’t have to be heavy or stifling- they don’t even need to be covering anything up as you’ll see. Layers can add interest and depth to an outfit. I’ve got 4 easy steps to help you rethink your strategy for layering this Spring (and beyond!).
Step 1 The Base
You know that Meghan Trainor song, “It’s All About That Base” – well, yeah, it is. Choose your base outfit. Top and pants, dress, whatever it is. Start there.
I wore this on Saturday and then again to church on Sunday. Well, not exactly like this, this is where it started. My wide leg ,high waisted pants were where it all began. Knowing I wanted to wear them with sneakers and my bodysuit helped me complete the base. This said comfort all the way.
Pro tip: If you want to wear wide leg pants, keep the top slimmer and not as voluminous. A bodysuit is great for this!

Step 2 Layer 1
Layer 1 is my 3rd piece – my completer piece if you will. This is the easiest way to look chic! It can also be the first one to skip when it gets hot unless we change our thinking. As much as I love a blazer, there are times when I’ll opt for a button up or kimono. My pink linen blazer is a favorite for this time of year. It’s old from JCrew but I found this one and it’s so similar. This is a classic piece you’ll wear year after year!

Step 3 Layer 2
Nothing wrong with the outfit so far but we can do better! You may not think of a necklace as a layer but I challenge you to rethink that! Select a necklace that adds some sparkle, shine, or color – whatever you decide. This strategy adds interest and polish.

Step 4 Layer 3
The final layer is selecting a handbag that is intentional, no just out of necessity. This is another way to keep yourself looking fresh and current. A quick way to look dated is to use the same handbag day in and day out, with every outfit.

Worn as a crossbody the handbag or belt bag can also add some shape to your outfit. In this case, with this particular outfit the belt bag is the finishing touch for the sporty chic look I was trying to achieve.
Another Look
To give you another look at how these steps work, I did the same thing with a casual, ribbed tank dress. Can you see how each step adds that extra detail that really completes the whole look?
Also note that I started with the dress and the necklace I wear almost daily. Layer 4 in this look was the hat.

Final Thoughts
I hope that this post gives you a new perspective on layers. If you’ve ever admired another woman’s sense of style, try to deconstruct the outfits she wears. I bet you’ll find she’s layering intentionally yet looks effortless. The more you practice these steps, the easier it becomes to put yourself together.
What are your thoughts on layering? Are you a fan of layering in Spring and Summer?
