Ways to Wear Wardrobe Basics: Black Denim & White Top

Having and knowing how to style wardrobe basics can help you answer that age old question of what to wear. This time of year many of us are taking a good, hard look at what’s in the closet so we can edit as necessary. Sales abound and temptations pull at the heart and purse strings which begs the question of when and where to spend money to update your wardrobe for the season. Today I’m sharing multiple ways to wear what I consider wardrobe basics, black denim and a white top. I have a feeling most of us either own these pieces or something very similar.

The Basics

For all of these looks I am wearing an old pair of black denim, a white camisole, my cap toe slingbacks, Gucci belt, and my favorite layered necklace. I wear this necklace several times a week because of its versatility and the punch it adds to any outfit. You’ll also notice my acrylic tube bracelets that I mentioned on Friday.

The great thing about these basics is that you can change them up based on what you already own. I am wearing a camisole because it’s still hot here but a short sleeve tee or white blouse would work just as well. You could switch out the black denim for trousers and change the shoes too.

Look #1 Add a Plaid Blazer

This first look can go anywhere – work, dinner, just about anywhere. Start with your basics and throw on a blazer, in this case one from Target last year. The colors of this pretty blazer are so perfect for fall but you could add any blazer you choose. This is an easy way to dress up the basics, feel pulled together and fashionable!

Look #2 Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is really a wardrobe staple in its own right and deserves a dedicated post. But today it becomes the third piece, the topper. Again, depending on your environment this can take you anywhere.

Look #3 Long Cardigan

The long cardigan made a splash on the fashion scene several years ago and isn’t going anywhere. I think this is because it works on every body; it skims, smooths, covers, and adds interest. I bought this one from Nordstrom last year and I love the neutral color, in fact by pairing it with black and white I feel like I’m wearing animal print minus the pattern.

Look #4 Embellished Cardigan

An embellished cardigan can fill so many gaps in your wardrobe. While it pairs so well with these basics, it kicks up the wow factor just a notch. Styled this way you have a holiday or special occasion appropriate outfit. Of course you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to pull this pretty sweater out, let’s celebrate every day!

I keep my eyes and ears open for sales on special pieces likes these in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. When Loft had their recent 50% off sale I did not hesitate to snag this cardigan. I love the idea of wearing something different than the standard red and green for Christmas and this cardigan is soft and beautiful!

Look #5 Shirt Dress Worn as a Duster

Wearing a shirt dress as a duster may be a new concept, but let’s embrace it! Wearing pieces multiple ways is yet another wardrobe stretching tip. This adds a little edge to these wardrobe basics. This is a fun and fresh way to shake things up. It’s also a nice way to add a lightweight layer and you can rest assured that no one will be wearing the exact same outfit!

If this dress looks a little wrinkled, you are correct. I ordered this from an online boutique and have yet to iron or steam it – I absolutely love it though and you will be seeing more of it very soon. Next time you see it, I promise it will be wrinkle free!

Thoughts?

So, have you found a new way to wear your basics? Have I given you any ideas? I sure hope so. It’s easy to get frustrated with what we have in our closets and feel like we have nothing to wear but WE DO. Sometimes we just have to change our thinking a bit!
