Walking Shorts – How and Why to Wear Them

The term walking shorts seems kind of funny, no? Can’t you walk in all shorts? But don’t let that silliness deter you; walking shorts are longer than regular shorts and shorter than capri pants so I suppose they do deserve a special name. Depending on what kind of environment you work in they may even be work appropriate. So today I thought I’d share how and why I wear walking shorts, maybe you’ll be inspired to try them yourself!

My shorts are a year old – snagged them at Banana Republic Factory Outlet. When I am shopping for walking shorts there are two things I am looking for – decent length and no cuff. The length depends on how long your legs are – I like mine to hit above my knee – but not too far above my knee. The cuff adds bulk so I look for shorts with no cuff but that is a personal decision.

The first look is something I could wear in my former school setting but definitely not when I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center (our dress code was very conservative). I’ve shared my blazer before here and this cute flamingo tee. I love pink and green together! I am wearing my new wedges and still love them! Green Walking Shorts

In retrospect I wish I had tucked the tee in – it would have looked a little more put together. Oh the lessons you learn taking pictures of your outfits!Green Walking Shorts

Last year I wore these shorts with what remains my favorite top. This one shoulder, ruffled, pink and white striped top sparks all the joy for me! Green Walking Shorts

When I purchased this fun OTS top last week I had no idea I’d wear it with my green walking shorts. Once it arrived and I saw the shades of green I knew it would be perfect with my shorts. Palm Print Top

Of course this top would look great with so many others bottoms – white denim, jeans, etc. and I can hardly wait to wear it all those ways. You should know the top runs small – I am wearing a large and the fabric is thin. I absolutely love the sleeves! Shop the top here.

So that’s how to wear walking shorts but why is another topic altogether. I think a longer short is flattering because of the coverage. My spider veins have always been an issue and I have shared tips and tricks here and hereto cover them. Something I cannot combat is the fact that my skin is losing elasticity and at almost 51 my skin most certainly isn’t what it used to be. In pictures my legs photograph fine but walking around is a different story. Let me be clear: I like my legs – they are strong and they are beautiful. I am also not suggesting that at a certain age we should wear longer shorts – it’s a personal preference. For me, I am leaning more towards longer shorts these days. I will still be wearing shorter shorts on occasion but I am seeing the place that walking shorts will have in my wardrobe.

Longer shorts do not mean frumpy and that is the message I hope to send with this post. Sometimes we feel like we get older and we have to trade our stylish ways for more age appropriate looks. I am a firm believer that we never have to sacrifice style!
