Hair and Self Esteem

This should come as no surprise that our hair and self esteem share a cozy relationship. Regardless of how we view fashion and other aspects to lifestyle and choice, hair is one of those things we can all mutually agree upon. If given a choice we’d rather not be without it.

Hair and Self Esteem

For the most part there isn’t a whole lot we can control when it comes to the hair we’re born with, right? Hair might be straight, curly, thin, thick, fine, coarse, and any color. Some of those factors will change over time but for the most part, your genetic code is beyond your control. So when we look at the impact hair has on our self esteem, that might lead us to believe that there’s little we can do to positively effect our self esteem. That would be wrong.

Controlling What We Can

Humans have successfully changed practically every aspect of hair from texture, color, style, and appearance. Whether it’s a great cut, a chemical process like color, curl, or relaxing we’ve done it all to the hair on our heads. We stock our arsenals with products and supplements with the hopes that our hair dreams will come true! Controlling what we can might mean paying attention to our nutrition, hormones, and lifestyle as well. So many factors impact our hair.

Helper Hair

Have you ever considered helper hair? The term refers to hair you aren’t born with nor do you grow; it’s something you add! Over the years – honestly since I first got hair extensions in college (1989) I’ve had loads of experiences with helper hair. I’ve worn something called a ‘fall’, a wig, and of course toppers. I can honestly say that each one has had a positive impact on my self esteem.

Recently I decided it was time for a new topper. It’s been years since I wore one! What I started noticing about my hair was how much thinner my bangs had gotten. My receding hair line continues to recede and all the styling tricks, hacks, and products can only do so much.

Since I had previous experience with Top Secret Haircessory, where to purchase the topper was an easy choice. The problem was that in the past I had purchased my toppers in person. Before the pandemic Orlando hosted a Southern Women’s Show yearly and I had the good fortune of finding the LA based company. Having the owner, Denise, and her stylists help me find the right piece took the guess work out of the equation. But since the demise of the event and the fact that I live nowhere close to LA, I decided to set up an online consultation.

During the consultation we talked about my hair thinning and loss and ultimately decided I need a full sized topper. There are different sizes and colors! Denise asked me if I had someone I could take it to have it trimmed so it would blend perfectly with my hair. I told her I did not and she helped me find someone not too far from me. Long story short, I got in touch with her and the process began.

My Hair Topper

The toppers from Top Secret are 100% human hair – nothing is synthetic! Each hair is hand tied and the clips are sewn on securely. I have found that when it comes to helper hair you definitely get what you pay for! There’s no point in buying a less expensive topper if I don’t feel confident in it and end up not wearing it. On that note, please know that I bought this hair topper and I am not working with this brand. I’d love to at some point if the opportunity presented itself. My motivation for sharing this is to hopefully help someone who may not be aware of the difference a hair topper can make.

How to Wear and Care for a Topper

Hair toppers like mine are not meant to be worn 24/7. They clip on and off easily. When not in use, store your topper on a wig form. Depending on how often you wear your topper, it will need to be washed and conditioned from time to time. You can use heat like blow dryers, curling irons, or flat irons but keep in mind that this hair will get damaged just like bio hair. Unlike bio hair if you cut off split ends, they will not re-grow!

I like to say that my hair topper is like my hair but better! It looks thicker and fuller but not fake.

Self Esteem Boosted!

Just imagine how you’d feel if your thinning hair wasn’t a concern? Would you be in more photographs? Would you smile more? Would you dress and hold yourself differently? My guess is yes. Yes, you would. If you are insecure or suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, you are most certainly not alone. I hope this post gives you something to think about and you realize that there are options and alternatives.
