Are Your Clothes Aging You? How to Fix That!

Much like my mental health themed posts, I hope this helps you look at things differently. Of course I’ll always stand by “wearing what you feel your best in” but I’ll also throw in a little “how do you know you feel your best in x ,y, or z if you haven’t yet tried a, b, or c? So, today, let’s ask ourselves, are your clothes aging you?

Let’s also preface this with the fact that I don’t believe in outdated fashion rules such as certain things being age appropriate or not. The funny thing is that sometimes we actually look older when we’re trying to look younger! My goal is to present myself in such a way that when people see me they get a good idea of who I am. The impression I want to make? I care for myself, I am confident, and I pay attention to what’s current. Ask yourself what impression you want to make?

There’s nothing wrong with not giving a rip about what your clothes say about you. I know plenty of people who dress purely because they must. Clothes serve a function and that’s it. My guess, however, is that you read blogs like mine because you do care.

Crazy Prints

When my mother in law was alive, she loved wearing clothing from Bonworth. They usually had a print that was carried out on the top as well as the elastic waist pants. She loved a good lighthouse moment or birds, maybe even a floral print. She was about my age now when I first met her and that was always her style. I loved her dearly and appreciated her modest style and demeanor. But she always looked elderly.

There are loads of crazy prints on shirts that can also age us. A fine line exists between a graphic tee and a printed tee. I’m thinking of the “Crazy Cat Lady” tees I have seen women wear. I get that you love your pets but I think there’s a better way to dress.

Here’s how to fix that: if you love wearing prints try a pretty gingham, a smaller polka dot, or even a floral. Animal prints never go out of style but how they are done, can look dated. Case in point.

Long, Flowy Cardigans

Hear me out. A long cardigan or kimono can be very stylish. But these older versions that just seem to scream “I’m hiding” look frumpy.

Here’s how to fix that: instead of a long, flowy and shapeless cardigan why not try a more structured jacket or blazer? I guarantee you will look more pulled together and chic! Even a more tailored coatigan looks better.

Pants That Are Too Baggy

Relaxed fit pants are on trend and super tight skinny jeans are definitely not. Yes, I have heard that skinny jeans are back but I won’t be wearing the super skinnies I wore in 2017. But pants that are too baggy and get saggy in the rear can age you. What are we hiding in there?

Here’s how to fix that: wear pants that fit! Try a trouser, and if your legs are your conscious area, choose a looser leg.

Long Tunic Tops

Long tunic tops have had their day and now we’re seeing ‘cropped’ tops and shirts. But not the cropped tops of the 80s. More often than not cropped means it hits right at the waist. A long tunic top cuts off your legs and looks frumpy.

Here’s how to fix that: Wear a top that hits at the waist. If you want to wear leggings and need something to cover all your lady bits then go for something more modern.

Capri Pants

I completely understand not wanting to wear shorts but also not wanting to wear a full length pant. But capri pants are a hard no for me.

Here’s how to fix that: a cropped pant will do the trick in a lightweight fabric. See my outfit below from last summer.

Update Your Denim

Some women, like my mother, do not wear denim. No jeans for them! But if you do wear denim, make sure you update them from time to time. Different cuts and styles usually last more than a season, so find a pair you love that love you right back! You’ll know because you’ll feel incredible in them. Try a slim straight pair – not too skinny and not too wide. I’d also suggest NOT BUYING a pair with embellishment on them.

Here’s how to fix that: try new styles! Go to a store and ask for help – the sales associate may be able to help you find the right fit and style. TYou could try Trendsend by Evereve (a great way to update your style!). Or order several pair (as long as there are free returns) and try them at home. You might be VERY surprised!

Don’t Forget

Don’t forget other things that complete your look like your glasses (sunglasses included), shoes, handbags, and jewelry. Find frames that suit your face shape and don’t be afraid to try something new. As far as shoes go – ugh, that’s a slippery slope, isn’t it? No one wants to wear uncomfortable shoes but we don’t have to ear orthopedic shoes either.

Challenge

I challenge you to think differently when it comes to your style. For example, if you feel you can only wear a certain shoe brand, spend some time trying on different shoes. So many brands now have shoes that are comfortable with wider toe boxes and padded foot beds. Even sneakers are stylish!

Shop at a new store! We can easily get in a rut if we shop at the same retailers over and over again. Mix it up, check out something new!
