Listen…I admit it. I am late to this party. Was it last year or the year before that the coatigan became a thing? Well, like most things it wore on me. The more I see it, the more I am influenced. This all led me to today’s post – Styling a Coatigan just in case you’re curious!
Styling a Coatigan
Ahhhh…the coatigan. What the heck is it??? As the name would suggest it is a hybrid between a coat and a cardigan. In my opinion, it’s about as thick as a very lightweight coat but thicker and sturdier than a cardigan. What I really like about it, over say, a regular long cardigan, is that it is more structured. And this 55 year old body loves all the structure it can get! With that in mind, let me share 3 simple ways to style the coatigan.
Over a Monochromatic Base
The easiest way to quickly look put together and chic is to start with a monochromatic base. The color doesn’t matter very much – it can be all black, all white, cream, camel, navy, etc. But when you top if off with that 3rd completer piece and it’s a coatigan? Well, hello modern and fashionable but also stylish and warm!
Style the Coatigan with a Dress
I know this doesn’t happen to just me – you throw on a dress and while a blazer would work you want to look a tad more casual and fun. My blazer loving heart never turns down an opportunity to wear my beloved but again, the coatigan brings a new element to the mix. It’s unexpected. It will keep you warm and set you apart from the crowd.
Elevated Casual: Denim and a Coatigan
When you wear your coatigan with denim you elevate the look. Any denim will do and any shoe will work as well. So, maybe you want a cool sneaker and a baseball cap, go for it. The coatigan is the perfect topper. Maybe it’s a button up shirt and a bootie – the coatigan works. See? So versatile.
Finding the Right One
One of the brands I swear by on Amazon is Anrabess. They have not let me down yet. When I finally decided to purchase my coatigan (on Cyber Monday) it was the only brand I would consider. I wanted to be sure the quality was top notch and that the fit would be good. This one comes in 20 colorways and sizes range from S – XL; for reference I am wearing a small. I bought my coatigan in the color apricot; deciding on the color was perhaps the hardest part as there are so many neutrals to choose from. It’s made of 50% viscose, 30% nylon, and 20% PBT (polyester fiber blend). It’s not knit like a sweater and won’t snag or pull. I found the right one for me!
What are your thoughts on the coatigan? Do you have one? Living in FL it’s a good weight for cooler weather since I very rarely have need for a heavy coat. I also thought it would have been helpful on my trip to Greece. I hope you enjoyed my tips for styling a coatigan!
