On Friday night I sat down to right this post. I had made some note in my phone and was scrolling to find the right one when I came across something from September 19. While I was out walking ideas popped into my head so out came the phone. I talked this into my notes and voila! Here it is!

Things We Need to Stop Telling Ourselves
This list could be longer but these are the things I hear often from people I know. Sometimes it’s the parents I work with – and that always makes me chuckle. I’m old enough to be their mother and they are telling me that THEY can’t do technology – ha!!! The truth is that I didn’t consider myself a technologically savvy person yet at age 49 I landed a job at a virtual school where EVERYTHING is technology based! So I know it can be done. Here’s my list:
I’m leaving this for the young people.
I’m too old for that.
I’m not a techie.
I can’t do that.
I don’t get that and I never will.
That’s not how my brain works.
Those days are over for me.
The problem is when we say these things we are limiting ourselves. We are keeping ourselves from growing and changing and moving forward instead of saying, I can’t or those days are over why not change our thinking to represent a growth mindset? The next time you catch yourself saying “I don’t know how to do that” or “I’m not good with technology” say I don’t know how to do that yet or I’m getting better with technology. This allows more freedom and growth.
Take on new challenges and turn away from the old thinking. Embrace the new. We CAN do anything if we want to. I don’t know about you but I want to be relevant, I want to be lively, I want to be energetic. I don’t want anyone to do things for me I want them to show me. I want to understand.
Tell me what you think, how do you feel when you hear people say the phrases above? Do you find yourself saying them? If you do, notice how you feel afterwards. Then try changing your words and thinking to embrace a growth mindset. Do you feel a difference?
