One trend I can scarcely avoid seeing is the Mary Jane shoe trend. Honestly, any ad or social media platform I see is bound to feature this trendy shoe. When I first started seeing it, I was completely turned off. There was no way I would be caught dead in a pair. Well, as most things go, I now own 2 pair. Which begs the question, Mary Jane Shoes Over 50 – yay or nay?

Mary Jane Shoes Over 50 – Yay or Nay
There are a few reasons I found myself in camp nay when it came to this style of shoe. For starters, it reminded me of a little girl’s shoe. At 56 I feel like I walk a fine line between things that look too youthful. Yes, I know, I know, there are no fashion rules. I wear what I like and what I want. But I cannot deny that at times I out something on and immediately think no. The other reason I was not a fan is because generally speaking anything flat with a rounded toe looks a bit frumpy in my opinion. There, I said it. I am more of a heels girl and the strap going across the top of the foot? Yeah, that cuts off the leg making legs look shorter. So, there you have it, 3 reasons I was camp nay.
Why I Say Yay to Mary Jane Shoes
So, why the sudden change of heart? Frankly after seeing them over and over again my heart softened. Also? I started seeing some with a bit of a pointier toe. I guess I am living proof that influencers actually do influence!
Maybe the other reason I am now happily residing in camp yay is because I have found two pair that are comfortable. Now, all that being said, I do think this is a trend that won’t last forever (short shelf, duh!) so I am not willing to pay a lot for a pair of Mary Jane shoes.
How to Style Mary Jane Shoes Over 50
What I have found is that with the right shoe, it’s easy to style the Mary Jane! In fact, they look great with shorts, a skirt, denim, and dresses. One of the key features for me is color. I like a shoe that is as close to my skin tone as possible. This helps to elongate my leg; along with the pointy toe.

Straight Leg Jeans + Mary Jane Shoes

Wide Cuff Denim + Mary Jane Shoes

Dress + Mary Jane Shoes

The mule style Mary Jane shoes I own are so easy to slip on and wear! I find myself wearing them almost daily. They run TTS and come in 5 colorways – plus they are on sale!
The red patent pair are from Walmart. They have memory foam foot bed and that makes them incredibly comfortable! I ordered them for my mom in red and in black and she loves them! After seeing her wear the black ones I almost got myself a pair. They look like real leather and look way more expensive than the $15 price tag!
So, are you team yay or nay when it comes to a Mary Jane shoe? Have you tried the trend yet? Let me know!
