At the start of a new season the excitement is palpable as we imagine all the fun new pieces we get to wear. The transition from the shorts and sundresses of Summer to the cardigans and flannels of Fall has fashion lovers scheming and planning. However, it can be a bit overwhelming as well as expensive if you take your inspiration from Pinterest and other forms of social media. What do you really need to create great Fall fashion? Today I am outlining what I consider to be the wardrobe essentials, or rather, building blocks you’ll want to be sure o have on hand.
Fall 2022 Wardrobe Essentials
You might think wardrobe essentials sounds an awful lot like a capsule wardrobe. That is not completely wrong. I do think capsule wardrobes are largely misunderstood. It’s only been in the recent past that I changed my opinion. What I once thought of as limiting I now see as freeing. Quite simply put, when you have a good foundation you can create multiple outfits and feel good in them!
My list of wardrobe essentials includes a black satin or silk blouse, straight leg denim, chunky loafers, a blazer, and faux leather. Keep in mind these are just 5 items that you can mix and match with other wardrobe staples. These just happen to be the pieces that can help elevate and refresh your Fall outfits. The goal is to look as good as you feel all while staying fresh, modern, and relevant.
Fall Essentials in Action
The beauty of a black satin or silk blouse is its versatility. It dresses up denim and then works well with skirts and slacks too. If black is not your color, try another dark shade. Why dark? Well, it’s Fall after all!

Straight leg denim is a classic cut that is back in a big way this Fall. Listen – you don’t need to throw out your skinnies but maybe put them aside and try straight leg. Wear your skinnies with tall boots and try straight leg everything else!

Loafers are another classic but once you add the chunky sole you have the more modern version. While a lug sole is not for everyone there are varying degrees. I prefer the slight chunky heel of these loafers. By simply wearing the newer, chunky loafer with an outfit you instantly update the look!

Hello, my name is Kellyann and I am blazer obsessed. Yes, you know by now I have a fondness for a blazer. But seriously, have you ever known one item with the super powers of a blazer? Throw one on and you are suddenly put together. Voila! Choose any blazer you’d like but I recommend a neutral color and that you buy the best quality you can. This will allow you to keep this wardrobe hero for many years – they never go out of style!

Faux leather anything is a wardrobe essential for Fall and Winter. Whether it’s leggings, pants, a skirt, a dress, jacket, blazer – you name it – it’s going to provide limitless styling opportunities. I recently purchased these faux leather cropped pants from Chico’s, thanks to Amy. They are buttery soft and come in black as well. I love this cherry brunette color (bonus: they are less than half price right now!).

Here are a few faux leather pieces at varying price points:
