Embrace Your Imperfections

Did you know that when you truly accept yourself you’ll be less likely to criticize others? That’s right, once you embrace your imperfections you’ll be more likely to accept others. In the end you really win because not only are you nicer to others but your negativity towards others blocks your own happiness. Less negativity = more happiness. Win!!!

Embrace Your Imperfections

Realizing that you are always learning, changing, and growing also means you will make mistakes. It means you are a work in progress. Look around. Everyone else is too.

This doesn’t mean that you settle for mediocrity. It also does not mean we can’t set goals and decide to change things. It does mean we grant ourselves grace. It means we hold our tongues before lashing out. It means we use kinder, gentler words towards ourselves and others.

Hold the Criticism

The next time you find yourself criticizing someone else take a good long look at yourself. Do you feel threatened by this person or their action? What’s driving the criticism? Can you turn it around and find something encouraging to say instead?

Our own imperfections are often mirrored in others. This can be source of frustration or irritation. For example, let’s say you grew up in a very chaotic household. You worked hard to find peace as an adult but when your family comes around it is so very evident that they are still the chaotic, crisis and stress driven people you remember. What ends up happening is that you start criticizing and judging; partially because you still identify with those unappealing behaviors. What would happen if we just let it be? What would happen if rather than trying to change them or talking down to them we just accepted their imperfections?

You might even be thinking, why did I do all of this work when I’ll end up exactly like them anyway? Well friend, what if you don’t? What if the hard work you did sticks and you become an inspiration? What if you allow yourself to enjoy others as well as yourself despite the imperfections? Hmmmm…
