Imitation is the Greatest Form of Flattery

Most of us read blogs and magazines to get inspired. Whether you’re looking for make up or hair advice, exercise, nutrition, or home decor inspiration you’ll find a plethora of options. I mean, really, how did we ever survive without Pinterest? I often think what a different childhood my own sons would have had if Pinterest had been around when they were little. What I love about blogs is the clothing and styling ideas I get from the bloggers I follow. What I am sharing today is the result of being inspired by two of my favorite bloggers.

Months ago I saw this cute dress on Andrea over at Living on Cloud Nine. Although it was from a site I’d never ordered from before I placed my order, the price was too good to pas up and it was so cute! When I received it and tried it on it was a little too short for me to wear as a dress so I thought I’d keep it and wear it as a cover-up.

A few months later I almost gasped when I saw what looked like the very same dress /tunic on Jennie at A Pocketful of Polka Dots. Better yet she paired it with denim and espadrilles! I was thrilled to find a new way to wear my tunic! In fact I left her a comment telling her I’d be copying her outfit! Take a look at my inspiration:

So call me a copycat but here I am:

The denim I am wearing I purchased right before I went on vacation.  White House Black Market had just started their big sale and I was shopping with a friend.  I hadn’t planned on purchasing anything (famous last words) but I couldn’t pass these up!  I paid a whopping $10 after an extra 50% off the sale price and applying my birthday reward.  They were originally $94.  Score! My exact pair are here. They have this tuxedo stripe down the side and a step hem. I am seriously considering trimming off the step hem because I’m not sure about it.  But the best news is that you can still purchase this dress for under $17. I was thrilled to see it is still available!  Wear it with denim, as a dress, or as a cover up and it comes in other colors, buy it here.

And that my friends is exactly why I follow so many blogs.  I love seeing real women wear real clothes in real life.  I hope Jennie is flattered by my attempt at imitating her outfit!

Since my self-imposed shopping ban went into effect you’ll be seeing me shop my closet and share recreations with you.  I hope you enjoy this! Have you recreated a look based on what you saw in a magazine or on a blog?

Later this week the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale will begin for cardholders. If you’re unfamiliar with it basically it’s a sale of new Fall and Winter items and as soon as the sale ends on August 6 the prices will go up. It’s a unique sale in that these are not end of the season items; they’re new, fresh fashions. It’s a great time to get premium denim, designer bags, shoes, and jewelry. If you’re not currently a cardholder go here to fix that by getting either a credit or debit card. As a bonus you’ll get a $20 Nordstrom Note to spend! Want to preview the sale catalog? Go here. The sale opens to the public on July 21st so if there’s something you’d really like it is worth it to become a cardholder and get early access. Items do sell out!

So before the BIG SALE starts, I picked out a few things I’d buy right now at Nordstrom if I had a little extra money right now and I wasn’t on a spending freeze.

Thank you so much for stopping by today, This Blonde’s Shopping Bag is going to stay empty for awhile but I promise I am full of inspiration!

Kellyann

  1. Soooo CUTE and you’re right, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! I LOVE this as a tunic and that is the thing, many of their dresses are too short so how perfect is this!! Love Jennie and she is a sweetheart too like you! Those jeans, can we talk about how cute they are!!!! I LOVE them, you look so fresh and fabulous!! Have a wonderful Wednesday beautiful friend!!

    1. Thanks Andrea! I could not find the original post of yours that made me fall in love with this tunic/dress. As cute as these jeans are I haven’t worn them much because it is sooooooooo hot here, really I break out in a sweat just running out to take pictures. I’m melting. Wouldn’t it be nice if when you melted you actually melted fat and extra weight off? I swear I’d be so skinny! Hahahaha!
Hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday my love!

  2. I always look to blogs and Pinterest for inspiration, especially when I am feeling less than creative. This is the cutest summer look, and one you could definitely wear into the fall. I love the styling of the tunic.

    1. Thanks Blaire! You and Whitney always show the cutest things and inspire me so much, in fact I am getting to put together a look inspired by YOU! I loved your pink bow shorts with the white blouse and turquoise necklace. I have similar pieces so I’m putting it together soon. Thanks for being awesome!

  3. Seriously…the inspiration I’ve found from other offers grew my closet 3 sizes! I was a straight up by the outfit and wear it like you bought it kind of girl. you look adorbs!

    1. Thanks Shelly! My closet has grown too and my bank account has shrunk – hahahahaha!!! Just kidding!

    1. Thanks Laura, I don’t usually do a re-creation but this one was so perfect since I literally had the exact same pieces. Now I’m on a roll and I’m scheming my next one, lol!
      Have a great day!

  4. You and Jeannie both rocked this look. Congrats on the major score on the jeans. I LOVE a good bargain like that. I’m unsure of the uneven hem on me, but I think it looks adorable on you. I’d say you could leave it or if you’re more comfortable cutting it off, go for it. If you could melt away pounds in the heat, I’d be moving in with you for a few weeks and doing just that!!! We’d eat ice cream and get skinny while doing it…LOL. Happy Wednesday sweet one!

    1. Thanks Lisa! Such a good deal on those jeans, right? I am still undecided about the hem which tells me it will probably get cut. Even after seeing the pictures I am not convinced I like the trend on me. It’s so hot that I haven’t worn them except for the pictures so it’s very likely by the time I get around to wearing them for real I’ll even out the hem.
For the record I think it is totally unfair that pounds don’t melt away with sweat. If they did we would have so much fun eating ice cream and getting skinny! Ha! Girls can dream, right?

  5. Awww, you look so cute in this, Kellyann! We are practically identical here. 🙂 Don’t you just love the colorful embroidery on this dress? I recently purchased a dress extender for these pieces that turn out entirely too short to wear as an actual dress. Your jeans are a fabulous style and I just cannot believe they were such an amazing deal!

    1. Jennie I am so glad you saw this post and I am thrilled you liked it. I purchased one dress extender but I think I need another one; I’m not too thrilled with it for some reason. It is still hard for me to believe the great deal I got on those jeans, now it just needs to cool off a bit so I can wear them, ha!

  6. The length of this top is awesome! I love that it’s a flowy top without being bulky. I just can’t get a card this year. Waaa. It’s so tempting not to visit Nordstrom though. Maybe I will for inspiration.

    1. Thanks Laurie, don’t give into temptation, stay strong! The sale will be open to everyone so soon and you have to do what’s right for you.
The funny thing about this top is that I realized I hadn’t ever worn a dress as a tunic before because they usually do add bulk but this one seems just about right.
I appreciate you reading and commenting so much!
