Dressing for the Weather

We are finally entering the time of year where cold fronts are common and our temps here in Florida actually dip below 70 degrees.  I’m happy when it’s below 80 but become ecstatic when it gets even colder! Sounds crazy I’m sure but I happen to think dressing in layers is not only smart but visually interesting too.

When it gets cold outside it’s often very warm and cozy on the inside because heaters are blasting.  So, how do you stay comfortable transitioning from inside to outside?  My job calls for me to be in both places so it’s essential that I think it through and dress for the two extremes in order to stay comfortable.

I refuse to sacrifice style for function; why can’t we have both?  Well friends, we can, we can.  Since I have no interest in a big, pufffy coat I rely on my faux leather moto jacket (similar, plus size option).  It’s thick enough to keep me warm when layered properly and certainly adds style!

When I am outside I’ll add a scarf (similar)to keep warm.  It’s amazing how much warmth a simple scarf can add.  Not only functional but fashionable – a great way to accessorize!

My very favorite skinny jeans (plus size option) in this dark wash work so well with my new plaid shirt and hot pink sweater. When I’m inside I’ll be warm but not too warm since these layers are lightweight.

When I head outside I’ll add my leopard infinity scarf and my moto jacket (similar, plus size option).  I love these two pieces because they really complete my outfit without covering it up, ya know?  I can’t stand it when it’s so cold outside that you have to hide your terrific outfit underneath a giant coat!  Don’t get me wrong I completely understand that sometimes that’s necessary for instance if there’s a snow storm.  However, living in Florida I won’t have to worry about that!

It was actually very cool and dreary on Saturday when we shot these pictures.  The wind was blowing too giving me Peg Bundy hair! Hahaha, do you remember Married With Children?  I promise I don’t tease my hair!

These booties from Toms are terrific.  I am always looking for a shoe with a cushioned foot bed and these deliver!  They’re comfortable enough to wear all day and they’re on sale! I wear
these no show socks with my booties.

So how do you dress for extreme temperatures?  It may be freezing outside but then you head indoors and it’s so toasty warm you need to strip down.  I say the key to being stylish in this situation is by wearing lightweight layers without ignoring colors, patterns, and textures to add visual interest. It makes dressing this time of year one of my favorites because there are so many elements to consider it never gets boring.

Oh, yes, you definitely need to stay warm. It’s kind of a joke here because we rarely have to wear a jacket for the full day, even if it’s cold the sun is hot!

Thanks Shelly – my hair is crazy big from the wind, I could hardly believe it! I asked my husband why he didn’t say anything and he just stared at me – I’m like, “Hey! I look like Peg Bundy!” So not what I was going for but I work with what I have!
I am loving this jacket, I’ve worn it 3 days in a row which is a record for Florida. Just feels so much more like the holidays when it’s cold outside!

Hey I just had to reply this morning. I live in a very small town in Canada that you would consider northern lol! It’s 5 degrees F here this morning so layers are a must but I love that I would also be able to wear what you are today with a real leather jacket.❄️

Hi Jennifer and thanks so much for commenting! If you were here you’d laugh so hard at all the Floridians who are shivering when it’s 60 degrees and then there are all the tourists in shorts and tank tops – it really is a sight to behold.
Yes, with a real leather jacket to keep you toasty you and I could be twins! Hope you stay warm and have a marvelous week!

Well cute as ever, Peg Bundy hair and all!!! That’s a hoot and I actually did notice you were rockin’ the hot mama hair in that picture. I think that plaid shirt may be calling for me😉 I’m really trying to be good and not shop (much) for myself. I keep buying and returning, but a girl needs a few new things. (this is where Kent’s eyes would just roll right out of his head..lol) I hope you have the best Monday and YIPPEE, tomorrow our babies come home!!! So excited (although she’ll be whining about missing Luke the whole time I have no doubt). XOXO

Isn’t that hair CRAZY? I swear we were outside and snapped a few pics and then immediately came inside and snapped a few. I did nothing to my hair – it was the wind, I could hardly believe it. You and I are both TRYING to be good but it’s not our fault the whole world is on sale and we’ll get the BEST DEAL ever if we shop now (this is where Brian does the eye roll). I was shopping today at the outlet mall and let’s just say I found several things for Santa to give me, but they were all way too good to pass up. I am going to try not to buy another article of clothing for myself until Christmas, I think, lol.
I am driving to Gainesville tomorrow to get Nolan and I am so happy. I don’t feel like it’s right to do anything Christmasy without him so once he gets here I can unleash the Christmas beast – hahahaha! I hope Katie doesn’t miss Luke too much, you’ll just have to keep her super busy having fun, and I know you will. Thank goodness there is Facetime, remember when we were that age? My word, I didn’t even have a cell phone!
Hugs to you my sweet friend!

TOMS has some great shoes! I should look at those booties, because I’ve been wanting a black pair with a low heel. I just adore that black moto jacket. I have one similar in a burgundy color, but would like one in black as well (lol). I really like the pink sweater paired with the plaid! Glad you’re enjoying some milder temps.

Thanks Carrie, I am loving this moto jacket so much – I can hardly believe it’s from Target! These Toms booties are so comfy I can’t believe I didn’t try them sooner. I wore them all day today while out shopping and they were legit comfy. This cooler weather is so wonderful I am praying it will last through Christmas (although in FL that may be way too much to ask but hey, a girl can dream, right?).
Hope your Monday was a great one!

Lol…I took shots the other day during some storm-force winds and my hair is ginormous in the pictures! You look absolutely gorgeous in bright pink my friend, it’s super flattering on you. I couldn’t agree more about scarves. In the Winter I rarely leave home without one. They make coats more interesting, but more importantly make a huge difference in the warmth department.

Thanks Deb, I have such a love for hot pink it’s a good thing I wear it well – it’s so happy especially when it’s cold outside and everyone’s bundled up in boring black or brown. I have to seize the opportunity to wear scarves, with not too many cold days I have to plan ahead so they each get a wear!
Never fails, the minute I want to get pictures done the wind starts blowing!

I am all about lightweight layers for those chilly days! I honestly think several lightweight layers are warmer than one thick layer. I love how that bright pink sweater looks with your leather jacket! The feminine and edgy vibes work so well together! You look fabulous!

Thanks Laura, I think you’re right about many thin layers being warmer than just one thick one. It works for me that’s for sure. My moto jacket is getting way more use than I ever expected, we’ve actually had several cool days – yippee!!!

Well, I thought they, Mrs R’s hair is looking gorgeously abundant and then you tell me it’s the wind and you knock yourself for having Peg Bundy hair. So here’s my HO. Your hair, amazing volume. Peg Bundy, amazing woman. End off!
Oh, and your outfit packs an amazing punch for your cold snap too.
    Hugs, sweetie.

Great way to dress for those extremes! I hate when it gets cold out but I can’t even wear sweaters because of the heat inside.

Thanks, my problem is the sun gets so hot that if I’m driving in the car I’m roasting even if it’s cold outside. Totally not complaining though because it is cooler here right now and I am THRILLED!!!

Well I’d say our weather today sounds extreme with 5 inches of snow. We will go outside in a little bit with Vivian and play. And yes we are both wearing plaid button-downs too. You look beautiful in all your layers and I love that your indoor photos by your beautiful tree turned out great, like mine did. I can’t always take photos outside these days with our extreme weather lol.

5 inches of snow is extreme, holy cow! I cannot even imagine. You’d laugh if you saw how we act when it’s in the 60s, it’s like we’re living in the Arctic Circle! The low at night is in the 40s and we have our electric blanket on.
It is hard to get pictures outside these days because it gets dark so early.
I appreciate all your kind words Ada!

Years ago we lived in Arizona and I owned NO coats…. in 2007 we moved to the mountains of Virginia and I now own 20 coats… one for rain, one for shine, two for when the leaves are falling, five for snow, etc. I’m totally in love with coats and all the options. I can see why you are excited that it fell below 79 degrees. LOL I used to get that same feeling in Arizona.

Thanks Diane, now I know I don’t sound crazy getting excited with the 79 degree weather! I keep telling my husband that I’d love to live in a cooler climate but he IGNORES me! Can you believe that? I guess growing up in PA was enough snow for him. Shopping for all those coats sounds like fun – there are so many neat options, lucky lady! Hope you’re having a wonderful week!
