Cutting the Mustard

To reach the required standards; come up to expectations. Why that’s what the old saying “cutting the mustard” means. Have you heard it before? It’s what popped into my head when I started planning this post. Mustard is one of those colors that not everyone can wear, or can they? I’ll be the first to admit it is not a color I reach for any other time of the year but Fall. My coloring doesn’t lend well to having it up near my face but that doesn’t stop me from wearing it layered as a cardigan or as pants.

Last week we were fortunate to have a few days of cool temperatures so I busted out my old mustard cardigan. I have had this cardigan for several years now. In the past I’ve worn it with my blue and white gingham blouse and I loved the way it looked. When I wore it last week (a day I was obviously going rogue as far as the common thread challenge goes) I decided to keep the blouse simple and add color with my pants and scarf. The colors in the scarf work better close to my face than the color of the cardigan. You might wonder why I’d even want a cardigan in a color that isn’t flattering on me. There probably isn’t a really good answer except it looks good with so many other colors and just kind of screams Fall to me.If you are wondering what to pair mustard with just think of how it appears in nature; the color of the leaves and other greenery for starters. Mustard also pairs nicely with leopard, but then again doesn’t everything pair nicely with leopard? Why yes, yes it does! Did you notice my favorite leopard cuff? I think an infinity scarf is always a good idea- no fuss, no muss, they style themselves!
Well friends, that about does it for me today. We are nearing the finish line of our kitchen renovation and these last few steps have been the hardest. We had the interior of our home painted and replaced the tile around our fireplace. Every room in the house has been disturbed by this process so there is literally no clean, neat organized space and it is driving me CRAZY! Thank goodness we shot these photos last week! I am hoping to share photos of all of this madness soon, it really is coming together beautifully and I am extremely grateful that we’re doing this!

Make it a great weekend friends!

Kellyann

    1. Isn’t it funny how certain times of the year just seem so perfect for certain colors? I never give mustard a second look any other time of the year! Thanks so much Nancy!

  1. I do the same when I wear my mustard cardigan, I look ill if I don’t wear a scarf next to my face. Lol!!

  2. You’ve definitely cut the mustard, sweetie! Despite what you say, I think you look absolutely gorgeous in mustard. The outfit is divine and I love love love it. I would never think to pair it with raspberry yet I think it’s this pairing that makes the outfit so exquisite! Thanks for the inspiration, Mrs R.

I’m longing to see your before and after shots of the house, I’m positively salivating as I type! TMI? Please don’t hold back on photos, I want to see every nook and cranny that’s been reno’ed … Please?!!

    1. Mary now that you have requested, ever so politely, I absolutely will post before and after pics. Although I have to tell you we didn’t do such a good job of taking before photos! It has been a crazy process but the results are saliva inducing fabulous! I am excited to share them soon – I am hoping next Friday will be the big reveal, fingers crossed the granite and my new sink arrive!
I think the mustard and raspberry look pretty good together too – I think you could definitely pull this look off!
Have a wonderful weekend, I am about to pour myself a glass of wine. It’s only 4pm here but it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!
      Hugs friend!

    1. Thanks Ruth! This cardi is so old but it’s held up so well, probably because I only wear it in the Fall!

  3. You are a fall vision of beauty friend. I feel the same way about mustard, but I must admit I’m kinda wanting a long mustard cardigan. Side note…I hate regular mustard?LOL. I can.not.wait to see all the reno pics. I know it’s been a long road, but will be so worth it. Enjoy your weekend! XOXO

    1. Thanks girl! I think a long, mustard cardigan would be awesome on you! So you can’t wait to see my reno pics and I can’t wait to see your Hawaii pics! What a fabulous trip. Speaking of trips, I will be making some fun trips too this weekend. Ya know, the grocery store so I can load up the new fridge and Target so I can load up on cleaning supplies because of all the dust! Ha! Love ya friend!

    1. That’s funny because I was just thinking how well my new camo scarf would go with my mustard cardi! Hopefully we get another cool down soon so I can wear it. It’s back in the upper 80’s here so I am back in shorts, ugh!!!!

  4. I only like house improvements when everything is back in its place and it’s all cleaned again. Living with it during the improvement is tough. Hopefully everything is finished soon and you can enjoy your new kitchen! I’ve been noticing more mustard color in stores lately and I am loving it! That cardigan is adorable with your colored pants!

    1. I agree with you Laura about house improvements. The kitchen would have been one thing but we also had the interior of our home painted so we that added another layer of crazy. We basically had to take everything of the walls and pack up. It will be great when everything is put back in its place!
Hope you’re having a great weekend!

  5. I have a mustard corduroy skirt that I love to get out in the fall. I’ve worn it with like an eggplant shade of purple a lot. I also have a mustard colored bauble necklace that I really like. I love the idea of a cardi like yours, because it isn’t TOO much of this color, yet it can be worn as an accent. You look lovely, esp with the bright pants with it and that scarf.

    1. Thanks Carrie and thanks for the suggestion – I like the idea of pairing mustard with an eggplant color. That sounds so pretty, I’m going to have to try it!

  6. I love mustard yellow…it’s actually the only shade of yellow that I can wear. I love it paired with your cranberry pants; fall colors are my favorite! I will sometimes wear it in the summer too since I have a really cute lace slip dress that is mustard. It’s fun because it’s a little unexpected in the heat of summer!

    1. OH yes, your coloring is perfect for wearing mustard. I love Fall colors too, they’re so pretty even when it’s 86 degrees outside, lol!

    1. Oh yes, Jamie, a white button up is an essential. Seems like I need a new one every few years but they’re so worth it!
