The Week in Clothes

Hi friends!
I thought you might enjoy a peek at what I wear to work. I’ve mentioned before that I am an elementary school counselor. That means I don’t have to dress for a corporate environment (Amen!) and at least a few days a week call for pretty casual attire. I have also come to the realization that if in fact I want to be serious about blogging I’ll need to up my social media presence and blog more than once a week. So I made a promise to myself that each day this last week I’d take a selfie and post it on Instagram (you can follow me there @thisblondesshoppingbag and also blog about what I wore (original, huh?).

Onto the goods. Here’s the thing, this week we celebrated Literacy Week with themed days. And listen, I don’t usually participate in all that business #partypooper. I was pleasantly surprised by the themes this week, they weren’t too crazy and I actually dressed according to the theme 3 of the 5 days. Winner! As a side note it’s our student council that decides the themes, this year I wasn’t the sponsor but I have been the Student Council sponsor for the last 7 years. Hmmmmmm, makes me wonder, how about you?

So Monday was Team Sports Day. It was also kinda cold. So, yeah, I was wearing clothes I hardly get to wear because it’s always so hot. I love wearing white denim in the Fall and Winter. I paired my white denim with my favorite blush colored blouse from Loft and my cargo vest. Keepin’ my feet comfy in my Lucky Brand booties. I wore my Stella and Dot ladder necklace and my favorite leopard cuff (because I can’t quit it).

Tuesday was Hat Day. Again, it was kind cool outside so I jumped at the chance to wear my OTK boots and my favorite hat (years old from Target). The dress I am wearing from Old Navy – last year. I loved how cute and comfy this outfit was. I had a hard time taking the picture so there are two. One I took before work and one I took after work. I think I’m gonna need a new house if I’m gonna blog. One with better lighting. #husbandgetrightonthat

Moving on to Wednesday, Black Out Day. Yup, turn off your electronics and read. Riiiiiiiight. In our county we use a computer program like it’s the Bible so good luck with that #conflictingmessages. Snarkiness aside I was thrilled for a 3rd cool day and a chance to wear my beloved faux leather leggings, a tunic, and the gorgeous scarf I received as a Christmas gift from a new friend. If you haven’t gotten these leggings yet I don’t know what you’re waiting for, they are so good!

On Thursday it was wear red day.  So I  wore a red top I purchased from SheIn – I have mentioned SheIn before on the blog. Trendy pieces at very low prices. I loved the sleeves on this top but I’m not a huge fan of the back. I took a picture so you could see, I had to wear a tank because it’s cut a little too low. Not a problem when a cool front rolls through but when the weather warms I probably won’t be reaching for this one. I am wearing jeans from Target, and I have to tell you they are super comfortable. I’ve had them for over a year now and they’ve held up great. They are lightweight and stretchy. For the pictures I wore leopard heels because this outfit needed something interesting. In real life I wore a pair of comfortable wedges. I grabbed my Kendra Scott necklace and my favorite leopard cuff from Accessory Concierge, I think I wear it at least three times a week if not more.

Finally Friday! It was Pajama Day but I had to attend an inservice at our district office so I chose comfortable layers instead. My favorite pair of Vigoss jeans along with one of my favorite tunics, a sweater to match and an infinity scarf turned out to be just as comfy as pjs (almost). Again my leopard cuff and simple earrings with comfortable booties. I actually got a compliment on the elevator as I was headed to the inservice which is always nice. I took these pictures after school and by that time it was warm enough to ditch the sweater. I wore the tunic untucked but in one picture I did a half tuck (front only) so you could get an idea of what that would look like.

So there you have it, a week of what I wore! Most of what I wore is old so I’ll link similar pieces. This is a longer post than usual so thank you for sticking with me. That’s what’s in This Blonde’s Shopping Bag, what’s in yours? Linking up with Patti for Visible Monday here

Date Night Look

Hi friends!

Saturday night my husband and I had the pleasure of attending a book launch at the Orlando Museum of Art. It was a nice way to have a date night that went beyond the traditional dinner and a movie. I’ll be honest I’ve never attended a book launch party before so we were excited to be a part of the excitement! When deciding what to wear I took into account the venue and of course our weather which has been so mild this winter. I chose to wear my black jumpsuit and a comfortable, platform wedge. My jumpsuit is 2 years old from Macy’s. It was such a steal, I bought it right before Christmas and paid like $10. Not only was the price fantastic but it wears so well. It’s comfortable and can be dressed up or down, worn with heels or flats. Talk about versatile! And it’s machine washable. I kept my jewelry fairly simple with an old necklace from Baublebar, black studs, my Michael Kors watch and a few bracelets. The shoes I am wearing are old and also from Macy’s, I was going to wear a dressier shoe but ultimately went with something more comfortable. I wanted to have fun and enjoy myself and it’s so hard to do that with foot pain. The clutch I am carrying is vintage, bought it years ago at an antique store. After we took these photos I decided to swap it out for something more colorful but I didn’t take any pictures with the new bag. Since everything I am wearing is old, I’ll link similar pieces because owning a super versatile piece like this jumpsuit ought to be on every woman’s list!

Now on to the book at the center of this story. The title is Beacuse of the Sun and the author is Jenny Torres Sanchez. This is her third book and I cannot wait to start reading it later today. Here’s a review by Jennifer Niven, New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places “An absorbing page-turner, equal parts light and dark, and filled with the sweetest, swooniest ache. I couldn’t put it down. Everyone needs to read Jenny Torres Sanchez. Now.”

I am so impressed with Jenny Torres Sanchez! Seriously, this woman is GORGEOUS and TALENTED, and she is living her dream. Now that is something to celebrate! You can get your copy of the book here or here.

Now I have to mention here that my husband took these pictures of me with Jenny and I SWEAR that halo effect around my head wasn’t planned or planted. It just happened from a random light fixture in the background. But that’s not stopping me from having a ball with it, I told my husband it is proof that I am in fact an angel, lol! I also took a picture of the cake because it looks exactly like the book cover and tasted great too, and if I’m being completely honest I don’t eat much cake so when I do it’s photo worthy!

And if it’s not filled with pieces you love? Well, then it’s time do a closet purge and buy pieces that speak to you. I mentioned cleaning out my closet and I did last week. What an experience, truly it’s a whole blog post in itself. I plan to do one soon.

Casual Work Outfit

Hi friends!  So here’s the thing, I work in an elementary school and for the most part that means I get to dress pretty casually.  Sure we have two days each week devoted to jeans and sneakers but the other 3 days I am not required to wear pantyhose (yuck!) or dresses.  In other words I am lucky because I can dress pretty comfortably while still looking put together and professional.  Typically I decide what I am going to wear based on my schedule for the day.  If I am meeting with parents I definitely take it up a notch.  The day these photos were taken I did not have meetings with parents and the schedule consisted mostly of paperwork.  And let me just be clear about something, I feel strongly that educators need to look put together and respectful, I am not a proponent of the “I look like I just rolled out of bed” look nor do I care for the excuse of “I work with kids all day so I have to be comfortable.” There’s a fine line between comfortable and sloppy, don’t cross it.

Okay, on to my look for today.  I have been eyeing bomber jackets since Fall and when I saw this one from H&M drop in price to $19.99 I took the plunge.  It’s lightweight and neutral in color.  I am wearing the light taupe but if you click on my link you’ll see many other color choices.  The price will depend on the color you choose.  If you are new to H&M you should know that their sizes run small, definitely more in line with junior’s sizing than women’s so keep that in mind.  I am wearing a size 8 in this jacket.

My Caslon gray jeans are so comfortable!  They have plenty of stretch in them so they don’t look baggy by the end of the day.  I am wearing a size 26 in them but you may want to go down a size when ordering these.  My exact pair seems to be sold out but they are still available in Plus sizes (and they’re on sale – SCORE!) so I linked a similar pair.

My tee is by Madewell and although you can’t see it in the pictures it has a small pocket on the left side.  I really like this tee and will order it in other colors for Spring and Summer.  I like it because it has washed well and kept it’s shape. It’s $19.50 but worth every penny.  This is a good time to mention the importance of investing in a few nicer basics.  Wearing colored jeans and a tee could be disasterous if the tee is too thin, pilling, or stretched out because it’s lost it’s shape.  A better quality tee layered under a jacket looks polished and put together.

I added a simple necklace.  Mine is old and from the BP line at Nordstrom so I linked a similar necklace.  A bolder statement necklace would have worked well and after seeing the pictures I probably should have added one with a little color.  There’s always next time, lol.

Let’s talk about these comfy boots I am wearing from Lucky Brand.  These are super comfortable leather booties.  The foot bed is made of memory foam and they are a dream to walk in.  It’s often hard for me to find shoes comfortable enough to wear all day because I need extra padding in the foot bed, an MRI informed me that I have almost no padding at all in the balls of my feet so it is a challenge.  Sometimes I add an insert or orthotic to my shoes or boots but I did not have to do that with these.

I want to say a big thank you to my friend Allison for taking these pictures.  She teaches first grade at my school but is also a fabulous professional photographer.  I brought my camera to school and asked her at the end of the day to snap these photos and she was kind enough to say yes!  These were taken in the back of our school after dismissal and I am so grateful.  Our friend Kelsey (also a first grade teacher) tagged along and she and I both learned a little something about photography.  This year I am going to work on getting more comfortable in front of the camera, seriously I don’t know the first thing about posing!

Look What the Wind Blew In

Hi friends!

Florida’s winter wind blew in our newest blonde! Meet Lauren, a 19 year old beauty adding a new dimension to This Blonde’s Shopping Bag. Yes, I am old enough to be Lauren’s mother, in fact, I’ve known her practically her whole life. That’s where the fun comes in, right? Women in their 40’s and beyond want to be stylish and fashionable without looking like we’re trying to dress like our teenage daughters. What better way to showcase how we can wear the same trends than to shed some light on a younger perspective and be photographed side by side! We chose to dress for cold weather on the one day Florida actually had some cold weather! We are calling it our one day of winter, where our high is 53,no worries, next week it will be back in the 80’s. Enjoy the photos and meet me below for the details on how you can shop for what we’re wearing.

Here are some links for pieces similar to what I am wearing. Most of my pieces are old so I linked similar items. I was so excited to see that my over the knee boots are on MAJOR sale at Target! Because our winter has been so mild I haven’t worn them much but I love them and they are surprisingly comfortable!

I think adding a fresh, new perspective will be fun, don’t you? I am hoping we can eventually get all three blondes photographed together to give you the best experience when it comes to imagining yourself in the latest trends regardless of age or size. It doesn’t get too cold to often here in sunny Florida so dressing for cold weather was fun . Lauren and I joked that we both planned to wear approximately 4 different outfits today just so we could wear our favorite winter clothes. That’s the way it has to be around here or you might miss your chance, it will be in the mid to high 70’s by Wednesday.

Next weekend I am planning to do a major closet purge. I cannot wait! I’ve been reading lots of articles on how to determine what’s worth keeping and more importantly how to part with pieces. Don’t worry I’ll be sure to document the whole process, it will be Epic!

So wearing fun hats and cold weather clothes was on the menu for today and that’s what’s in This Blonde’s Shopping Bag today! What are you wearing this week? I’d love to know! Today we are linking up with Patti for Visible Monday, check it out here!

Fashionably yours,

Hello 2017!

Good morning friends!
Wrapping up our Christmas break is so bittersweet. Our son heads back to UF tomorrow and we head back to work. Boo! I thoroughly enjoyed the break, especially this last week. Having my husband home with me is terrific. Seriously just going to bed at the same time and getting to sleep in have been such a treat! Tomorrow I’ll be back at it with my 4:30 am wake up time which means I’ll be in bed by 10. Today will be spent getting things ready for the work week and making sure my college freshman is well stocked with all the goodness of home.

In 2016 I read The One Year Bible. I loved setting and reaching that important goal; it’s so important to start the day with a devotional and quiet time for me. That discipline really shaped my days and blessed me. This year I have decided to focus on happiness and getting out of my own head. Starting this blog last April was such a leap of faith and one that continues to challenge me. Each day I play a mind game with myself about whether or not to continue but ultimately I have decided to continue because I need the creative outlet. I asked Diane to join me in this endeavor because we had talked about it alot together but that’s all we were doing was talking so I took the first step and was happy she wanted to join me. I envisioned us working side by side taking great photos and creating good content – and hopefully encouraging women to take their style to the next level without spending a fortune. Diane and I both love fashion but we have different body types as well styles so I thought we would really have something special – something for every woman. I still believe that but unfortunately that’s not how things have turned out. Moving forward in 2017 things will be changing and I have some exciting plans to put into place!

This year I am going to make a concerted effort to resist impulse buys and hold out for things I really love and need. It is challenging for me to walk away from great sales especially at this time of the year. Making it a tad easier is the fact that our weather has been off the charts hot this fall and winter. I refuse to buy any sweaters because I haven’t even had much of a chance to wear the ones I bought last year (which were hardly worn). While shopping with my friend last Friday I was thisclose to buying a gorgeous sweater at Anthropologie. It was on clearance with an additional 40% off but I walked away from it – even after trying it on and liking it. I feel like I am making progress!

Today’s post isn’t all about what’s on my mind though. Here are some pictures from my new camera of some purchases I made that absolutely thrill me!

That’s what I wore on Christmas Eve. I bought both the top and the pants from Loft during one of their 50% off sales. In fact, I ordered both pieces while driving our son back to Gainesville after Thanksgiving break (relax, I was a passenger). Oh the convenience of a smartphone!
I found both pieces to run TTS (true to size). I am wearing a small in the top and a size 4 in the pants.

I could not find a link for my exact top so I linked two similar tops. Also, a word about my Kendra Scott necklace. You NEED one. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Her stuff is FABULOUS. This is the one necklace I can always count on, I take it on vacation because it goes with everything and can easily be worn casually or for an evening out. Trust me, get yourself one of her pieces.

Next up are those faux leather leggings I’ve been loving and wearing the heck out of! They are so comfortable and lightweight enough to be worn in this crazy 80 degree weather we’re having. I’ve dressed them up and down and love them both ways. I am wearing an XS in these.

I am wearing one of my favorite tops, so comfy and looks good too!

I included a few great pieces from Lush!

Well, that was quite a post! I will be back later this week but for now I hope you enjoy taking a look at what I wore for Christmas Eve and my new faux leather leggings. That’s what’s in This Blonde’s Shopping Bag today, tell me, what’s in your shopping bag?

Fashionably yours,
Kellyann
